Prostitution in Taiwan to be legalized?

Al Jazeera went deep into this issue

I saw this video embedded over at the Grand Narrative and couldn't help but wonder about it. Kudos to Al Jazeera for making this 25min video about one of Taiwan's social issues. They say there are 100.000 illegal prostitutes in Taiwan. They say much more things, it's a very complex issue and I don't want to write to much about it. I just wonder: Do you think prostitution in Taiwan should be legalized? What would be the pros and cons? Share your thoughts in the comment section, but please only after you watch the whole video.

It's a tricky question and answer... if there's no demand there will be need for it...:T poor women.

It's hard to say. The main issue I have with this is that, with legalization, there is the possibility that the nature of our existing (and seemingly more innocuous) local sex industry may create a legal facade for the more insidious trafficking and abuse that goes on. On the other hand, it would be a good thing to be able to tax this industry, and to better regulate STDs.

An easier first step, if we feel inclined to criminalize prostitution, is to similarly indict the johns. That would certainly constrain the market. However, it would be puristic to believe that this industry would entirely go away.

Personally, I would find how Taiwanese social mores change, if this legislation passes, quite fascinating. Being an essentially Asian country with a slightly different perspective from the educated into liberalism Dutch, I believe the experiment would bring out facets of our common humanity that I cannot at present foresee.

btw, could you tweak your links to either open in a separate tab/window or right-click available? It's slightly inconvenient to not be able to stay on the same page when clicking on links.

@Grace: Thanks for your interesting comment. Please do come back again, your feedback is much appreciated.

Regarding right-click: To open links in new tabs, please hold down CTRL when you click on a link. I cannot disable it, if I do, they steal too much... now is still ok. Before I even had stricter protection and loosened it a little.
